In The Police’s “Every Breath You Take” music video, the video is more performative than narrative driven. However, the video plays entirely in monochrome and opens with a bird’s eye shot of cigarettes in an ash tray. These props and this color scheme helps to create a film noir theme and vibe. Furthermore, the darker color scheme also reinforces the dark interpretation that the song is about stalking, emphasizing its subject matter. Additionally, the video transitions between shots using fades and dissolves, this helps to emphasize the themes and idea of memory and reminiscing throughout the lyrics of the song and the video. The video then transitions to the silhouette of a Window cleaner cleaning a window. This emphasizes the idea of watching someone (through a window) and then further emphasizes the themes and messages of stalking that are present in the lyrics. The video perhaps targets a younger more romantic audience of people who in love as it conveys the themes and ideas of loving someone. However, you could argue that with its reminiscing nature it also targets an older audience who can reminisce about the times of being with someone they were once in love with.
