In the Goo Goo Dolls “Iris” music video, they use props in their setting such as microscopes to symbolize the idea of watching someone, observing and an illusion of control. The setting of the tower and being high above everyone watching down, also emphasizes this illusion of control that is present throughout the video and the lyrics. Furthermore, the video is half performative rather than narrative driven to really draw attention to the lyrics and emphasize the messages of the song. Additionally, through the grey, dark coloring of the video it emphasizes the drama of the song, and this idea of darker themes such as loss. Additionally, the editing during the opening of the song is quite slow motion and cut together like a series of nostalgic photos. This emphasizes the themes of nostalgia and memory in the song, looking back on something you once had, and the transition from this style into the normal standard edited video style reinforces this idea of reliving the memories and trying to live in a false reality, linking back to this illusion of control. The video and song perhaps target a younger audience who have experienced loss, whether it is heartbreak or a loved one, and aims to draw them in to assist them through the time. Alternatively, the video could also be targeted and tailored towards an older audience due to their reminiscing on past memories and times, and the song and video is used to remind them of their experiences and reminiscing.
